Practical UN*X Survival Guide

These pages cover some basic commands and tasks used in UN*X systems. They are far from being complete, they are just for Survival. For using Cadence Design Tools (at least for the beginning) knowledge of UN*X is not essential but is certainly a plus.

Please keep the following in mind:

• UN*X filenames are case sensitive : "File" and "file" are treated differently.
• There are no obligatory suffixes (like .exe, .doc etc) in UN*X.
• Do not use the symbols !@#$%^&*()-+|\><:;{}[]~`'"?/ in file names. Use letters of the alphabet, numbers,underscore (_) and dot (.) in your filenames. Use the same convention when assigning names for Cadence libraries and designs.
• It is next to impossible to "undelete" files in UN*X. Be careful when deleting files, you won't have a chance to recover them.
